1) In late 1800's a German biochemist Frederich Miescher first observed
DNA . And after nearly a century researchers unraveled the structure of
the DNA molecule and realized its central importance in biology.
2) Many believe that James Watson & Francis Crick were the first to figure out the structure of double helix of DNA ,but most of the Research was done by an British Biophysicist named Rosalind Franklin. 3) Rosalind Franklin went on to perform her exceptional work till her death , in 1958 at age 37.Based on her research” photo 51” Watson and Crick figured out the double helix structure of DNA for which they were awarded Nobel prize in 1962.
4) An animal’s entire code, comprising a long series of the letters A,T,G,C is called a genome.
5) The human genome is about 3 billion letters long, even a fast typist, working 8 hours a day, would take 50 years to type out the complete human genome. 6) We share about 98.5 per cent of our DNA with a chimpanzee.Cabbage and Humans share about 40-50% common DNA.
7) About 8 % of the human DNA is made up of ancient viruses that used to infect us.
8) Approx 2 g of DNA could hold all digitally stored information in the world.
9) If uncoiled, the DNA in all the cells in your body would stretch 10 billion miles, which is twice the distance from Earth to Pluto.
10) Genetically modified crops/Organisms have DNA from another organism inserted to give desired qualities.
11) All humans have the DNA structure that is 99.9% similar, and the last 0.01% is enough to identify different DNA sequences (to tell apart which DNA belongs to whom)
12) DNA is damaged up to 1 million times per cell per each day, and the body has an elaborate and constantly active system to repair it. Failure in repairing DNA can lead to cancer or sometimes even cell death.
13) Researches at Cambridge University believe humans have more in common, genetically speaking, with a mud worm than you do with a spider or octopus or cockroach. 14) DNA is used in identify victims of accidents or crime. PCR (Polymerase chain reaction) is used to amplify a sample of DNA so that there are more copies to analyze.
15) One million bases , called a megabase (Mb) of DNA sequence data is roughly equivalent to 1 megabyte of computer data storage space.
